Blending the Traditional with the New

In support of the Historic Alexandria Antiques show being held November 14 - 16 in Old Town Alexandria, I wrote a short article for a local/regional paper called Our Town. I thought it turned out rather well, and I have had several nice comments and a few visits to the shop because of it. Again, showing how publishing can increase an appraisers profile and also drive business to the practice.

The article was about changing collector tastes as many younger collectors trend toward 20th century modern styles. As a dealer with more traditional antiques I of course make a case that both the modern and traditional styles can co-exist very nicely.

The article partially states I recommend that young collectors who are interested in mid-century decorative look at how traditional antiques can augment and enhance their modern collections. I also recommend to collectors of traditional antiques to look at the modern style as well. Collectors still need to understand quality, rarity and value for traditional antiques, but by patronizing quality antique shows and dealers, much of the work of vetting the items has already been done. When visiting area antique shops and shows, there is always something of interest and uniqueness that will fit with a modern decorative design approach.

A little self promotion is always good, if you wish to read the full article I wrote for the Our Town publication, click HERE.

Here is also an interesting side story to go along with the Alexandria Antiques show. Bob James, President of Armacost Antiques Shows has given a small show booth to the local chapter of the International Society of Appraisers. The National Capital Area Chapter of the ISA will have appraisers on duty for consultations with potential clients. This is not an appraisal day, it does allow the show patrons the ability to sit and talk with an appraisers for 15-20 minutes about potential needs and services. This is an opportunity local appraisal chapters around the country may wish to emulate. It is a win/win for both the promoter and the appraisal groups.

To visit about the show, promoted through Armacost Antiques Shows, click HERE. If you are in the DC area, I highly recommend visiting the show, it is a very manageable size with excellent merchandise and friendly dealers.
