State of the Middle Market

I have been waiting a while for the Historic Alexandria Foundation Antiques show to come around. It is my hometown show, and I consider it the first show of my now shortening show season. Since it has been over 6 months since my last show, it is always good to see other dealers and talk with collectors about the state of the market and the antique industry. Over the next few days I plan on talking with many of the dealers and patrons at this long running and successful show and try to get a clearer picture of the fine art and decorative art middle market. Many of the dealers who display at Alexandria travel to other quality shows throughout the country so I typically get a very good anecdotal read on the state of the industry in the middle market. It is usually a little easier to document activity at the top end of the market, and a little harder to do so in the middle markets.

I will talk with many dealers and patrons, and report back to you the state of the middle market as they see. Since I am displaying at the show, my recap and review wont post until sometime next week. Keep checking back for the update. As many appraisers also are dealers, the feedback should be very interesting and hopefully revealing as well.
