Although the full and final results are not yet in and tabulated between the various sales, the main sale of important American furniture at Christie's appears to have done very well. Earlier this week I posted about the sale and one lot in particular, a Newport Rhode Island dressing bureau by John Goddard (see image) with a pre sale estimate of $700,000 to $900,000. The bureau sold for $5.68 million. The furniture sale totaled over $12 million alone, selling 223 lots.
The pre sale estimate from the Antiques Trade Gazette earlier in the week was for Chrisite's to total nearly 12 million for all of its 1,000 lots being offered in the Americana week sales. They have met that goal with one quarter or its lots being sold, thanks in large part to the bureau.
I will post more information and breakdowns on the Americana week sales as information becomes available later this week and the after the various houses post there complied results for the sales.
It appears the sales have gotten off to a good start, and again shows that quality and provenance sells, as the upper market sectors continue to have strong interest and sales results.
