ASA Personal Property Appraisal Symposium

ASA has a very interesting a what appears to be a very worthwhile and forward thinking appraisal symposium scheduled for 3 days, starting March 31st in Chicago.

The first day is on insurance appraisals, while the second and third days are devoted to Fair Value (not FMV, Fair Value is used for annual reports, mergers, acquisitions, etc.), which is the required value standard for the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).

Sandra Tropper, AS, TAFAC chair and symposium speaker/program chair commented about the ASA Symposuium and the fair value concept, "We are covering FASB regs and have a board member from the International Valuation Standards Council speaking on how the council views PP. We know that PP appraisers are going to be needed for things like art collections and general office contents. I am afraid if we are not qualified, they will turn the jobs over to BV people and others who nothing much about PP."

It appears the Fair Value standard will become more important to personal property appraisers in the near future, and the sooner we are educated and able to write to the fair value standard the more client opportunities we will have and successful our practices will become.

The program schedule and info from the ASA website is
