ASA Mini Seminar on Photography Conservation

The ASA chapter in Northern California has started a program of mini seminars for appraisers. The programs look very interesting, and the cost of $35.00 is rather nominal. The first mini seminar is scheduled for March 16th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Gallery 291 in San Francisco. The program is on photography conservation with speaker and conservator Gawain Weaver.

I find the idea of mini seminars with experienced speakers at reasonable prices to be a very interesting tool for local appraisal chapters to both inform members and perhaps secondly to raise some funds for their treasurer. Even inter organizational seminars would work in many areas.

Other upcoming Mini-Seminars will include The Intricacies of Appraising Photographs with Denise Bethel of Soethby’s, New York and Identifying Antique Frames with Aedicule Fine Framemaking.

The ASA NorCal states on the upcoming seminar

Photography Conservation- Gawain Weaver Photography Conservator
A great opportunity for Personal Property Appraisers to learn about the subtleties of identifying photography.
Understanding and differentiating between the various photographic processes is important in the description and valuation of a photograph. Gawain Weaver will discuss identifying photographs, what to look for in terms of print deterioration, and how to describe it.
You will receive a Vocabulary List for describing photographs in an appraisal. Also, The Basic Photographic Sample Set, used in his workshops on the care and identification of photographs, will be available at a reduced price. The sample kit is a great tool with 18 samples of photographic and photomechanical processes and also includes a 60x – 100x handheld microscope for identification.
