ASA Post Conference Day at Mount Vernon

As many appraisers are aware, ASA is holding its 75th annual conference in Washington DC, at the JW Marriott Washington DC hotel. The conference dates are August 14-17.

In addition to the standard conference schedule and tours (click HERE for more info) ASA has scheduled a day at Mount Vernon for personal property appraisers.  This extra day ( August 18, 8:30 am till 5:00 pm, $125.00) includes transportation to Mount Vernon, lunch with speaker Elaine Banks Stainton, Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Doyle New York who will discuss proper cataloging.   Proper cataloging and current techniques in describing property is always an in-demand presentation topic for personal property appraisers. The day will of course also include tours of Mt Vernon and its new museum.

ASA website states the following about the day after conference at Mount Vernon.

Morning:
Travel along the banks of the Potomac River and enjoy an intimate view of 18th century Virginia. Destination: The gates of Mt. Vernon, home of George and Martha Washington. ASA participants will be met and taken to an audience with Lady Washington in the Interpretive Center. From there, participants will be guided on a tour of the Mt Vernon interior rooms, all faithfully decorated in period colors and original furnishings, to present an authentic view of life at the estate in the 1700s.

Lunch:
A special feature of the day is an educational luncheon for tour participants. Elaine Banks Stainton, Senior Vice President and Executive Director of Doyle New York will speak to attendees about proper cataloguing - the accurate description - of fine and decorative art. "The Art of Describing: Cataloguing Works of Art," will address how one of the most important jobs in cataloguing an appraisal or an auction catalogue is simply to make the clearest and most accurate description possible. Clients in this context are of many kinds and have many different needs.

They can be owners, families of owners, attorneys, would-be buyers, IRS examiners, in fact every person with a real interest in a work's proper description. Ms. Stainton will discuss standard appraisal terms and their use, and will address unusual situations wherein conventional terms should be supplemented with further explanation.

Afternoon:
After lunch, participants will view a private screening, followed by a tour of the Mt Vernon Museum, conducted by the collections staff. Participants will have an opportunity to relax and browse the 6,600-square-foot gift shop after the tour.
