The Northern California chapter of ASA has become very active in promoting mini seminars. The mini seminar program they have initiated must be proving succesful, as they are planning events throughout 2012. Definetly a very active chapter, and one I am sure ASA is proud of.
They have already held several mini seminars year, and now have scheduled another for November 1st with a member of the FBI Art Crime Team.
The FBI Art Crime Team members can be very interesting speakers. I saw Robert Wittman, the past head of the team at the AAA conference in NYC last November, and a few years ago ISA had a member of the Art Crime Team speak at their conferne in Charleston, SC.

The FBI has a dedicated Art Crime Team of 12 special agents, supported by three special trial attorneys for prosecutions. The Agents are located in different cities around the country. It also runs the National Stolen Art File, a computerized index of reported stolen art and cultural properties for the use of law enforcement agencies across the world. This index covers a wide variety of property including fine art, decorative art, antiques and carpets. Since its inception, the Art Crime Team has recovered more than 2,600 items valued at over $142 millionThis presentation will familiarize Personal Property Appraisers with many facets of how the FBI Crime Team works and the criteria for how stolen artwork and cultural property is added to the computerized index.
Our presenter will be Special Agent Susan Garst who has a strong background in the arts. Susan Garst has been a Special Agent with the FBI for 5 ½ years and involved with the Art Crime Team for 4 years.Prior to becoming an FBI agent, Special Agent Garst worked primarily as an archaeologist and forensic anthropologist.
