Mei Moses, the publishers of art market performance indexes and analytics has recently announced the expansion of their services to include true art returns achieved in addition to the published indexes.

Given the usefulness and realiability of their repeat sale auction database Mei Moses will now calculate the true return for easch art work based upon the sale price, the original purchase price and the time interval between the events. Where the Mei Moses Art Index assist with analyzing art trends, the true return reports on art market sectors and artist will be of assistance to appraisers in justifying adjustments and calculating final value conclusions.

Mei Moses reports
We have decided, on a seasonal basis, to expand our analysis of the art market and report on performance based on true art returns achieved in the market place in addition to the index estimates of those returns that we already provide on our website.  The Mei Moses® repeat sale auction database is uniquely able to answer this question since we know the original purchase price (PP), ultimate sale price (SP) and the time interval between these auctions (T) of each item we add to our database.  We can therefore easily calculate the true return for each art work, using the simple formula SP= PP*(1+I)^N, and solving for I the compound annual return (CAR).  In many of our prior reports we have plotted these returns versus holding period and purchase price to give information on the strategic issues of optimal holding period and optimal purchase price.  We have decided to expand this analysis to include a seasonal report on the comparison of art object true returns and the returns achieved by the S&P 500 total return index, where dividends are reinvested tax free, for the same holding period as the art.  This analysis will be done on an all art basis and for our seven individual collecting categories.

We hope you enjoy this new report based on the 1900 repeat sale pairs and the 800 works that did not sell but had prior auction purchase prices we added to our database for the last winter and spring auction season.
