Financial Returns of NY Sales


Two reports on the recent NY art sales have just been published.  The Mei Moses index looks at the financial returns, and ArtTactic looks at some statistics of the sales, many we already know, but it is a good recap.

As we know, the impressionist sales did not seem to perform well, while the contemporary sales were strong and in some instances record breaking.  From a financial perspective, the Mei Moses analysis supports this, with post war and contemporary sales returns around 15% based on repeat sales, and only about 5% for modern and impressionist returns.

A TALE OF TWO MARKETS: POST WAR AND CONTEMPORARY EVENING SALES SOAR WHILE EVERYTHING ELSE SPUTTERS AT MAJOR NOVEMBER 2012 NEW YORK SALES THE NEW YORK AUCTION ART MARKET RESPONDED TO CONTINUED GLOBAL ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL UNCERTAINTY WITH BIPOLAR RESULTS.

THE POST WAR AND CONTEMPORARY (PWC) EVENING SALES PRODUCED SPECTACULAR RESULTS WITH AVERAGE COMPOUND ANNUAL RETURNS FOR THE 27 LOTS WITH PRIOR AUCTION SALES OF 15.3%. THE PWC DAYS SALES AND ALL THE IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN (IMPMOD) SALES PRODUCED BELOW AVERAGE RETURNS. THE 94 PWC DAY SALES PRODUCED AVERAGE RETURNS OF 5.1%. THE IMPMOD SALES PRODUCED AVERAGE RETURNS OF 4.8% FOR THE 132 LOTS WITH KNOWN PRIOR AUCTION SALES.

ARTS’ PERFORMANCE RELATIVE TO EQUITIES WAS CONSISTENT WITH THESE RESULTS. ONLY THE PWC NIGHT SALES PRODUCED RETURNS THAT BEAT THEIR EQUITY COUNTERPART. THE RETURNS ACHIEVED BY INVESTING SIMILAR SUMS IN THE S&P 500 TOTAL RETURN INDEX
FOR THE SAME HOLDING PERIOD AS THE ART WORKS WAS 6.9% FOR PWC NIGHT SALES 5.6% FOR THE PWC DAY SALES AND 6.8% FOR ALL IMPMOD SALES. THEREFORE ONLY PWC NIGHT SALES BEAT EQUITY PERFORMANCE

Post-War and Contemporary sales in New York finish the year on a high.

New York’s Post-War and Contemporary auction sales last week finished the year on a record high. The Evening sales across Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips de Pury raised $764,600,000 (excluding buyer’s premium) against a pre-sale estimates of $642,450,000 to $911,800,000. This was 15% higher than the last art market peak in May 2008.

The success of the season was driven by the auction houses ability to continue to source rare and high quality works of art, with only 12% of the lots going unsold. The top 10 lots accounted for 42% of the overall volume, down from 50% in May 2012. This suggests that there is wider spread of high-value works at the very top end of the market, and that the sales were more broad-based and less dependent on the outcome of single very high-valued items.

The widening at the top end of the market can be analysed by looking at the distribution of prices. A total of 35 works (excluding premium) sold above $5 million last week, compared to 24 in November 2011. If we look at even higher price levels, a total of 14 works sold above $20 million, compared to 3 works in November last year. As a result the average auction price came in at $4,964,935 across the three auction houses, which is a 9% increase from May 2012, but 64% higher than November 2011.

This year, the top-end of the Post-War and Contemporary art market has demonstrated a remarkable performance in light of the difficult economic climate and the negative economic outlook. High net worth individuals are increasingly viewing this segment of the art market as an alternative investment, as traditional assets continues to underperform.

With the supply of rare Impressionist and Modern works dwindling, buyers and collectors are increasingly focusing their attention on the Post-War and Contemporary art market, which raised more than twice the total of the Impressionist and Modern sales taking place the week before.
