Third Annual Gold Conference
April 11 – 13, 2013

Gold has had an irresistible pull on man for millennia. The warmth of the yellow metal and its malleability have been key to making gold both the metal of choice for the creation of adornments and a repository of value recognized throughout the globe.

In this, the third, international gold conference, we take a holistic look at this precious metal from extraction to the production of finished goods with a focus on jewelry, the largest sector of demand for gold. We begin by exploring the varied solutions for sustainable extraction and processing, and consider how the jewelry industry and other sectors are addressing these challenges, including those posed by what is termed “conflict gold.” We also consider the heightened demand for gold, both for adornment and as a repository of value, demand which is linked to increased prosperity in emerging markets such as China, and India. We will delve into this phenomenon, considering cultural, economic, and other factors that underpin this increase in demand.

We focus on gold in jewelry, tracing an historical arc that begins with Egypt and continues through the present. We explore the marriage of technique and design and other values in the pursuit of beauty. Contemporary makers – including those who might be termed emerging talents -- will discuss the marriage of technique and the implications for their work of increased gold prices. We also explore the associations that are conveyed by and add meaning to the jewelers’ creations, transforming them from object to talisman or emblem of position.  Not least, we highlight beauty, originality, and the power of the makers’ work, exploring in particular the synthesis of all factors joined together in the pursuit of beauty.

Among those participating are: jewelers Namu Cho, Kara Ross, George Sawyer, and Waris; David Lamb, managing director, jewelry, World Gold Council; Daniela Colaiacovo, CEO GoldLake; Alberto Milani, CEO, Buccellati, NA; Mark Emanuel, jeweler and co-owner, David Webb; Jeffrey Christian, managing partner, CPM Group; Cindy Edelstein, president, Jeweler’s Resource Bureau; Cecilia Gardner. president  & CEO, Jeweler’s Vigilance Committee; William R.
