Last week Sotheby's and Christie's held their important American Week sales in New York City.
Sotheby's sales (not including the Hamilton document sale I reported on yesterday) totaled $19.4 million, including buyer's premiums. This was the total from 5 sales, including four single owner sales. The total estimate range for all of the sales was about $15.2 million to $22.7 million. The regular Americana sale, including important furniture totaled $5.1 million against a pre sale estimate of $5.15 million to $7.95 million.
The sales results were decent, but certainly not great. I think it shows the Americana market is stable, but remains at a lower level with good buying opportunities.
Still waiting for more information on Christie's sale, but what I have discovered so far is the sale of Americana of furniture, folk art and silver was only fair, totaling $3.8 million.
