I like new computer gadgets and software solutions that help my retail antique business and my appraisal practice. In the past I have recommended Secure Repository, developed by ASA appraiser Gene Ruelle. Secure Repository allows appraisers to upload documents to a secure site, password protect and then allow permission based access. It works great for storing electronic versions of appraisals, large files and perhaps most importantly, for allowing secure client access to the file for download and printing. For more information on Secure Repository, click HERE.
There are other times when we may wish to send a file to a client or fellow appraiser which does not need the high level of security offered by a service like Secure Repository. Often times there are problems, such as emailing large files, sometimes the file is just too large to email, or you do not have access to a cloud based storage and transfer service.
Keep in mind, the following service is for files that do not need security protection, and is to be used not necessarily as online storage, but as a facilitating program for file transfers. The new service is called Crate and with a free registration the site allows 6 crates (similar to folders), 50 mb file size and 200 mb and unlimited time to store your file on the Crate server. You can even use the service without registration by uploading a file and getting the link. With the unregistered version, the file will remain on the cloud server for a period of only 30 minutes before it is deleted. Once the file is uploaded to the Crate it is assigned a link, which can be used to download the file. All you have to do is email the link to whoever you want to open the file. Again, keep in mind there are no passwords protecting the file and contents, so use with caution, and remember to delete the file after the intended user has downloaded. The site also has a higher level of service, offering large storage and file sizes for a fee.
