Heading back to Alexandria, VA after a great few days in NYC at the AAA annual conference. Great crowds and some really excellent presentation on interesting topics. My favorite was the first panel of the conference with noted art reporter and author Georgina Adam, Evan Beard of US Trust and Doug Woodham of Art Fiduciary Advisors. The back and forth on questions ranging from where the art market is headed, to bitcoin and blockchain, to freeports to data reliability. It was excellent.
And, from a purely appraisal methodology view point I learned much from the panel discussion on Mass Appraisals. The program ran over its allotted time, and I would of liked to have heard even more. AAA President and USPAP instructor Cynthia Herbert gave a very infomrative presentation on the differences between Standards 5/6 and 7/8 of USPAP and when to use. Much is up to the discretion of the appraiser and scope of work, while using standards 5/6 employs the use of mathematical modeling applied to a universe of objects. The clarity on this was really needed.
I also had time to visit some museums and also TEFAF, and of course some great restaurants and networking. Today before leaving, I will visit the Met and the Chippendale exhibition.
As a professional appraiser, if you are not attending conferences such as AAAs and ISA (in Louisville in April 2019) you are really missing out on great educational and learning experiences as well as networking opportunities. They can be expensive, but I find the return on investment makes them well worthwhile.
